The Artist
Salvador Dalì, Catalan painter (Figueres 1904 – 1989). One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, after a brief involvement with the Surrealist group, he was excluded due to his sympathies for right-wing regimes. In Dalí’s work, Surrealism took on an individualistic, ironic, and provocative character—famous for his publicity stunts, shocking behavior, and autobiographical essays such as The Diary of a Genius (1964). Among his best-known works are Femme dormant dans un paysage (1931, Venice, Peggy Guggenheim Collection) and The Persistence of Memory (1931, New York, Museum of Modern Art).
